Reusable system in the canteen

We are very pleased to inform you that the new reusable system will start in the canteen today. So, you will now be able to order your meal-to-go in a reusable bowl. The payment of a deposit is not necessary, the lending process runs via the specially developed web application IntakeDAV.

What is IntakeDAV?

In the research project "Reusable and Cascade Economy at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld of Trier University of Applied Sciences" (funded by the Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy and Mobility Rhineland-Palatinate), an app-based reusable system is being developed for the canteen at the Birkenfeld site. With the help of the web app IntakeDAV, food-to-go can be served in a reusable bowl.

The IntakeDAV app is a single-page web app and was developed as so-called on-prem software (local use of the software under one's own responsibility), thus does not contain any connection to third-party systems in order to meet the highest requirements for data protection, especially processing in the EU. Data management and data sovereignty therefore remain with the operator and are not passed on to third parties.

The material of the selected reusable bowl is a bio-compound consisting of a bio-PP (bio-polypropylene) and spruce wood fibers. The bio-PP is made from waste vegetable oils, a waste product of the food industry. The spruce wood fibers are also a waste product from sawmills. The wood used comes from sustainable forestry in Scandinavia and is FSC and PEFC certified. The reusable bowl is available in three different versions: a large bowl for main dishes, a small bowl for salads and a cup for soups, which can also be used for hot drinks.

The project is a cross-site collaboration between the Department of Computer Science at the Trier site and the Department of Environmental Economics/Law at the Environmental Campus, headed by Prof. Dr. Susanne Hartard and Prof. Dr. Georg Rock.

Why are we doing this?

The Single-Use Plastics Ordinance bans the use of certain single-use plastic products but does not solve the core problem of waste prevention, because even single-use packaging made from renewable raw materials - in the case of our cafeteria, it is single-use packaging made from sugar cane - has a high impact on the environment. Reusable systems represent a solution for waste prevention and must be offered as an alternative to single-use plastic packaging in the catering industry from January 2023.

The introduction of the reusable system is expected to result in a substantial improvement in the area of waste prevention at UCB.

The project team also hopes to obtain data on the circularity of the reusable bowls, on anonymized user groups, and on waste avoidance and CO2 savings potential.

How does it work?

Using the web browser on your smartphone, visit the following address:

 intakedav.hochschule-trier.de

Log in with your university account.  If you do not have a university account, you can also register by clicking on the "By e-mail code" button with your name and a valid e-mail address.  After entering your data, click on "send". You will now receive a code to this e-mail address, which you must enter in the "Code" field that appears. In this case, please also check your spam folder.

After successful registration, your personal QR code will be displayed, which you can use to borrow the reusable containers in the canteen.

If you want to take your food with you (office, home, ...) so order your food-to-go in the reusable bowl at the food counter. Your food will be handed to you by the staff in the reusable bowl. At the checkout, the barcodes attached to the reusable bowls are scanned with a barcode reader. Then present your personal QR code to the cashier, which will also be read by the barcode scanner. Done. You will now see in the app under "MY ITEMS RENTED" that you have rented the bowl(s).

Attention! The Intake app QR code for contact information tracking during the Corona pandemic CANNOT be used for IntakeDAV!

You must return the bowl to the dining hall within 10 days. You can see the bowls currently on loan in the app under " MEINE ITEMS à AUSGELIEHEN ". You will find the return station in the entrance area next to the cashier's desk. It is not necessary to show the QR code to return the bowls. Simply place the bowl(s) in the bin provided and the kitchen staff will collect and scan them. After the kitchen staff has scanned the bowls, the bowls you returned will not show up in your app under " MEINE ITEMS à AUSGELIEHEN ". In this case, pay attention to the update time indicated in the app and click the " AKTUALISIEREN " button, if necessary. All your borrowings will be displayed under " MEINE ITEMS à HISTORIE ".

The bowls are cleaned after being returned and can then be borrowed again.
